Is America ready for Tyra Banks in the White House?
Call it an homage to Michelle Obama, or call it what you will. Either way, there's no denying that Tyra Banks' new pictorial project for Harper's Bazaar is a tad weird. In a photo spread available on their website, Tyra and some dead-eyed male model try to invoke the Obama family spirit at work and play.
When it came to paying homage to Michelle Obama for this story, Banks found the process "surreal." "It's kind of embarrassing," she confesses, "but in my early 20s, I used to want to be a princess. But I didn't want to have to marry somebody in order to do it! Of course, I don't see the position of first lady as a princess, where it's something you have to marry into. With Barack Obama, his becoming president is them becoming president because Michelle was there from the beginning. Without Michelle, he wouldn't be there." Tyra Lynne Banks (born December 4, 1973) is an American supermodel, television personality, and talk show host.[1][2][3] She first emerged to prominence on the catwalks of Paris, Milan, London, Tokyo, and New York, but her work in the commercial world was her breakthrough. She is best known as hostess/judge of the reality television show America's Next Top Model since its 2003 debut, and is currently hosting her own Daytime Emmy Award-nominated talk show, The Tyra Banks Show. Banks is one of only four African Americans and seven women to have repeatedly ranked among the world's most influential people by Time magazine.

Despite the divorce of her parents when she was only 6 years old, and the torments of her older brother Devin, Tyra\'s youth was happy and trouble-free.Though it might be hard to believe, Tyra was tall, skinny and awkward as an adolescent. She was constantly teased by her brother and her classmates, and often ran home crying to her mother for comfort. But late into her high school years everything changed. Tyra filled out her skinny frame, began to work out and finally decided to become a model. She pursued that goal with the determination that now marks all of her activities.
After being turned down by four modeling agencies because they didn\'t think she was photogenic, Tyra finally signed with Elite Model Management at age 17. She had her foot in the door and she was ready to push right on through. Instead of beginning her freshman year at Loyola Marymount College, Tyra moved to Paris for a year and modeled for many of the big names in fashion, including?Ralph Lauren?and Chanel. She then moved back to the States and continued modeling, rocketing her way up through the ranks.

Banks says she knows the cycle of abuse all too well. While in her 20s, Banks says she was
emotionally abused. "He never hit me, but I would say there were blows to my spirit, blows to
my emotional well-being every day," she says.
On the outside, Banks says no one could see the signs. But behind closed doors, she says he
was jealous and blamed her for his bad moods. "He was a master at being able to be happy
and nice to everybody else but whispering these negative things to me," she says. "I'd start
complaining to my friends, and they're like: 'Well, he's fine, girl. He's fine with us. Everything's
fine.'"
Although she was one of the top 10 models in the world at the time, she says her self-esteem
sunk lower and lower. "I stayed because I felt like if I left and he didn't change and didn't
treat me how I felt I deserved to be treated, I was a failure," she says.
One day, Banks says she finally confronted herself. "I walked to the mirror in his bathroom. He
wasn't there," she says. "Out loud I looked in that mirror and I said: 'Tyra, who are you? What
the hell are you doing? Get out of here.'"
Although Banks says she tried to leave her boyfriend many times, she managed to get sucked
back into the relationship. At one point, she says she turned to her mother for help. "I said:
'Mama, please, just take me. Pull me out of this relationship. Tell me to leave him. Hole me up
in your house. Unplug the phones. Protect me from him.'"
Her mother refused. "[She said:] 'You have to do this on your own. I will be here as somebody
to support you in this. But I will not tell you to leave, and I will not cut you off from him,
because you'll just run out in the middle of the night and go straight back.
