By Doug Maxwell

Charleston, SC. is a family vacation destination that has plenty of family fun activities for everyone. There are museums, beaches, naval maritime history, rich civil war history, parks, plantations, and a historical district with a number of tours that include horse drawn carriages, bus, and walking tours.

Much of Charleston's history is located on the peninsula and there are several ways to experience it. On walking tours to carriage rides, the Charleston tour guides are well trained and very knowledgeable about the history of the city and region. With so much history to see one tour may not be enough.

Take a boat ride out to Fort Sumter and on the way you will see fabulous homes, dolphins in the harbor and you'll pass by the spot on the Battery where in 1861 Gen. Beauregard watched as the first shot was fired in the Civil War. You will visit the island where the Confederate soldiers held out for 27 months before surrendering.

Charleston's historic homes are a great attraction and there are several ways to enjoy them. Take a carriage ride down 300-year old streets through Charleston's historic neighborhoods and listen to the clippity clop on the pavement as the horse drawn carriage makes its way down Charleston's historic and charming avenues. Your tour guide is familiar with the history and family of each home and shares this with you during your tour.

If you want to learn more about Charleston you may want to consider a walking tour. A walking tour is normally two hours in length and the experience is remarkably different. Old Charleston Walking Tours has several walking tours in Charleston. One of the favorites is about Charleston's haunting legends and tales on this walking tour through Charleston's historic district. This tour is filled with stories of ghosts and haunted inns and assorted other stories from Charleston's haunted past.

A must visit is to Patriots Point. The Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum opened on October 13th, the birthday of the United States Navy, when the USS Yorktown was opened to the public as a museum and the Patriots Point mission was underway. Patriots Point has become one of the largest museums of its kind in the world with the addition of other ships such as the destroyer USS Laffey, USS Clamagore and the USCGC Ingham. Also is the Cold War Submarine Memorial and the Congressional Medal of Honor Museum.

To experience the Charm of Charleston, plantation tours are a great way. With about a thirty minute drive you will want to give yourself a few hours to enjoy them. A great choice is Middleton Place, which also has a restaurant and an inn. This makes for a great place to stay if only visiting for a short time and then driving into Charleston the next day.

Location is everything while staying in Charleston, and there are many choices from B&B's, beachside rentals and modestly priced motels. To plan for your lodging needs visit here and you will find some lodging that will fit your budget.
